Brazil does not do things halfway. The food hits. The music hits. The people are beautiful. And the beaches the beaches are something else entirely. If you know, you know.
As someone who splits time between São Paulo and Chicago and has traveled extensively through Brazil, I can tell you: this country has some of the most LGBTQ+-welcoming beach culture in the world. Here's where to go, what to expect, and what to wear when you get there.
Ipanema Beach, Rio de Janeiro — Posto 8 & 9
If you know, you know. Posto 8 and 9 on Ipanema are the gay stretch specifically the area near Farme de Amoedo street. This is where Rio's LGBTQ+ community has gathered for decades. The vibe is relaxed, beautiful, and completely accepting.
Bring a brief, (sunga) not shorts. This is Rio. Dress accordingly. The Rio Tie-Side Brief was literally named for this beach.
Praia da Barra, Salvador (Bahia)
Salvador is one of the most Afro-Brazilian cities in the country and its beach culture reflects that loud, colorful, full of life. The LGBTQ+ community is visible and celebrated, particularly during Carnival season.
This is a beach for the man who wants culture with his coastline. Go during Carnival if you can. Wear something bold the Carioca collection was inspired by exactly this energy.
Praia do Futuro, Fortaleza
Fortaleza doesn't get enough credit in the gay travel conversation. The beaches are stunning, the barracas (beach bars) are lively, and the LGBTQ+ scene is warm and welcoming. Praia do Futuro is where locals go which is always a good sign.
The water is warm, the sun is strong, and the whole vibe rewards those who dress like they meant to be there.
Florianópolis, Praia da Joaquina & Praia Mole
Floripa is Brazil's gay beach capital and it's not particularly close. Praia Mole is the gay beach, stunning dunes, beautiful crowd, relaxed energy. If you're doing a longer Brazil trip, this is a non-negotiable stop.
Pack light, pack bold, and give yourself at least three days.
